You’re Hired Competition

25 June 2009

Seven lucky teenagers have won paid summer jobs with local firms including Steelite International.

Local firms are to take on 15 and 16 year olds for paid summer jobs after the teenagers won an “Apprentice” style competition. The seven winning teenagers undertook several tasks over a period of nine months in the “step-up challenge”.

The competition was created by Waterworld owner Mr Chaudry and the Bucknall’s Mitchell Business and Enterprise College.

During the challenges, participants were given a mentor to inspire them and help them reach their potential, including Kevin Oakes, CEO of local tableware manufacturer and supplier Steelite International. Tasks included producing a business plan for a planned family day at the company.

One lucky winner from Bucknall, Shane Proctor, aged 16, will be joining Steelite International for a summer placement. He said; “I’m excited to be going to Steelite International because I found the tour really interesting”.

Julia Ledingham, Enterprise Co-ordinator at the Bucknall’s Mitchell Business and Enterprise College said that “all the students worked very hard and showed that education does not only belong in the classroom. It’s about giving the youth of today some aspirations and reasons to work hard to achieve their goals”.
